This
page lists independent living apartments for seniors. Some communities have
other options as well, and might offer a range of living arrangements, so that
people can stay in the same community when their needs change. However, all of
the properties on this website have at least some apartments for what is
generally called “independent living”. This list does not include those
facilities with all “assisted living” units, or nursing homes, or those
buildings with just rooms (not full apartments).
All
senior communities have minimum age requirements, although some also include
persons with disabilities who are younger. The age criterion is usually 55 or
62 years. Since many senior apartments are government subsidized, they often
have income restrictions as well – that is, for many apartments your income
cannot exceed a certain amount. Some apartment properties for seniors have a
waiting list, sometimes for several years; they have been included here for
those who are doing longer range planning. Many of the apartments with an
independent living option do include meals and other amenities like
housekeeping. Of course, the rent range for apartments with those added
amenities is considerably higher than you would pay for just an apartment. Some
of the others require that people “buy” their apartment or make a substantial
financial commitment to become a member of their community. A list of senior

There is a great variety of types of apartments for seniors and you will need to
contact each one directly for details and more information about a particular
community. We have tried to provide a comprehensive and accurate list of senior
apartments in the greater Grand Rapids area. Since we could not find any
complete lists, there may be some apartments we are not aware of and so were not
able to include. There may also be some that we list that should not be listed
